Here is quick reference on what to do in the case of an orthodontic emergency. Most problems can be dealt with at home first on a short term basis before coming into the office for a more permanent fix; if in doubt, please call our office for additional assistance at (505) 473-5437.

Lost, broken or ill-fitting retainer: Teeth can move quickly out of place once retainer wear is stopped. The most important step here is to contact the office quickly to schedule a visit for a new impression or to make an adjustment to the retainer as quickly as possible. If a wire is bent on a retainer, there is a much better chance of adjusting it back to appropriate fit if the retainer has been recently worn.
Pokey wire: A wire can become irritating for several reasons. If spaces between teeth are being closed, then a wire can become long in the back of the mouth through the process. Also, the initial wires are very flexible and can slide in one direction or slip out of the terminal brace. In either case, you can try to put wax on the offending wire at home then call the office so we can adjust, replace or clip the wire.
Broken appliance: We use many types of appliances – some provide active forces such as expanders and others are passive like holding arches, making for many possible appliance emergencies. If a sore develops on the cheek, inside lips or tongue, use wax to cover the offensive area. Fortunately, the mouth heals very quickly. As an aside, rinsing with a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse or warm salt water can facilitate healing. If an appliance comes loose on one side, place back on the tooth and call the office so we can have you come in immediately to reconnect. If the appliance comes completely out of the mouth, save the appliance and schedule to have it re-cemented ASAP.
Loose or irritating brace: If a bracket comes loose, this usually does not cause any pain or discomfort, but it can delay or disrupt your ortho treatment. Please call us to replace the bracket as soon as possible. It is amazing how quickly a tooth will move when not connected to the rest of the braces. If the bracket is irritating, then use wax on top to smooth.
As always, we are here to answer any questions or concerns about your child’s orthodontic journey. Please feel free to call our office! (505) 473-5437
